ADHD at the Workplace - Focus Unleashed
A Guide for Creating More Inclusive Workspaces.
ADHD is becoming a more prominent topic in society, as well regarding workplace inclusivity. Many employees with ADHD face challenges because workplaces are not neurodiverse-friendly, with issues in design, atmosphere, and job conditions that are often invisible to neurotypical peers and supervisors.
This bachelor thesis explores the main challenges faced by individuals with ADHD in the workplace and how they may vary among different genders, while further emphasizing on the untapped potential for making workspaces more inclusive.
It combines a review of current literature with real-life experiences from affected individuals and expert insights, both conducted via interviews.
The findings highlight the significance of office size and layout, the need for quiet rooms for focused work and recovery, and the option for remote work. Interpersonal aspects, such as understanding and awareness at all hierarchy levels, are also crucial for a more inclusive development. Open, clarifying dialogues between employees and supervisors can be beneficial but vary highly among individuals.
The thesis presents a detailed checklist with recommendations based on theory, expert opinions, and the experiences of those interviewed. These measures can significantly reduce stress and enhance career success for employees with ADHD, while also helping companies improve workplace inclusivity and employer branding.
